President’s Message

After this very hot, dry summer it’s hard to imagine that the curling season is close at hand. The Board has been busy during the summer and thinking ‘curling’ since we last met in May at the Annual General Meeting. We are anxious to get going! We are looking forward to showcasing the Welland Curling Club with three major events taking place this year that involve curlers from outside our club. The OJCT event in September and the CIS CCA Canadian Championship and OFSAA Championship in March will show curlers across Ontario and Canada that we know how to promote and host major curling events. We will need the help of as many members as possible to make our plans a reality. Please get involved!

Open House this year is only one week in duration. It runs from Oct. 3 -8th, so mark it on your calendar. It’s a great time to introduce those prospective curlers to the game through instruction, to get needed information regarding leagues from the various sections, to complete forms and payments, to get back in shape and of course to socialize. Plan to attend! Last year we had 68 new members. Plan to bring a friend and help our club grow.

There are many opportunities to curl at the club again this year. Daytime curling will be offered for ladies on Tuesday afternoons and Thursday mornings. Evening curling will include our Mixed Open Competitive on Mondays, Business Ladies on Tuesdays, Men’s Stag Night on Wednesdays, Mixed Social and Rental Curling Fridays and of course Industrial League on Thursdays. The latter is a great way to get involved with team play if you are new to the game. You can sign up individually or as a team by contacting Karl Kratz (905- 892-4173). Little Rock and Junior curling will again be scheduled for Sunday afternoons , as well as School Curling during the week. In addition Senior’s (anyone available) Curling is offered Wednesday afternoons, and this year mixed member curling will continue Thursday afternoons with time allotted for instruction and practice. Our ever popular theme nights will again be offered this year. It’s a great way to play, feast and socialize with other members, family and guests. Sign up early for these!

Change continues to happen at our club. We are looking forward to this year. It promises to be very exciting. The Welland Curling Club works because of member involvement through volunteering and sponsorship. We thank all for their continued help. ROCK THE HOUSE!

Welland Curling Club

CIS/CCA Curling Championships:

From March 14-18, 2012, the Welland Curling Club plays host to the University Curling Championships of Canada. The best 8 men's and women's teams from across the nation will battle it out in Welland to determine curling supremacy. Plan to attend and cheer on the various teams, including our local hosts, the Brock University Badgers.

OFSAA Curling Championships:

Many of the most talented high school curlers in the Province of Ontario will be in the peninsula March 21-24, 2012. The Welland Curling Club, as host club, and the other four clubs in the area will see the best teams compete for the High School Championships of Ontario. OFSSA is a prestigious event for the athletes, who have to earn their way by competing in the Zone and regional levels across Ontario. 40 teams will be competing. Plan to attend and see this exciting Championship!
